WHO declares monkeypox global health emergency

by

This Saturday morning (23), the WHO (World Health Organization) classified the spread of monkeypox as a public emergency of global concern. The announcement was made by the organization’s president, Tedros Adhanom.

The classification was the subject of discussions for the last week, and the WHO emergency committee did not reach a consensus on whether or not the disease should be treated as a global emergency. It was up to the president, with criteria explained during the announcement, to decide to establish monkeypox as a public emergency that must be observed and fought globally.

“We believe this is the moment of this announcement, considering that, day after day, more countries and people have been affected by the disease. We need coordination and solidarity to control this outbreak”, said Adhanom, stating that the risk in the world is still relatively moderate. , except in Europe, where it is high.

According to the portal Our World in Data, from the University of Oxford, until last Thursday (21), 15,510 cases of monkeypox had been confirmed in 74 countries.

In Brazil, the Ministry of Health confirmed 607 cases of the disease until last Friday (22).

Another concern of the WHO is the stigma generated by the disease. Today, according to the organization, 90% of monkeypox infections occur in men who have sex with other men. “Stigma and discrimination can be more dangerous than any virus,” said Tedros Adhanom.
