The Ministry of Health confirmed on Friday (29) the first death from monkeypox in Brazil, which is also the first outside the African continent in the current outbreak of the disease. The patient was a 41-year-old male.
The disease is transmitted mainly through contact with the wounds caused by it – and, in this new outbreak, sexual intercourse has been one of the main forms of infection.
The WHO (World Health Organization) even launched an alert for men who have sex with men to reduce the number of partners, since this group concentrates most of the cases in the world. But the organization has been criticized for stigmatizing this segment of the population. The virus can infect anyone and already spreads among other groups.
In this Monday’s episode (1st), Café da Manhã discusses the spread of monkeypox around the world. Infectologist Esper Kallás, who is also a columnist for Folha, explains how to prevent it, analyzes the risks of creating stigma when trying to fight the disease, and discusses the lessons that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has left for dealing with the current situation.
