Brazil has already registered six cases of patients infected with the omicron variant of the coronavirus. This Friday (3), the government of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed the first case in the state. Before, São Paulo and the Federal District had already attested the presence of the strain in five samples.
The case of Rio Grande do Sul is that of a woman residing in Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), who returned from a trip from South Africa —the country where the omicron was initially identified— last week. She developed a fever after returning.
The patient is in isolation at home and is monitored by the city’s health surveillance.
The woman had received two doses of Covid vaccine. People who have had contact with her will be tested.
Also on Friday, the city of Rio de Janeiro ruled out the first suspected case of the omicron variant in the city. Authorities were investigating whether a 29-year-old woman had been infected with the new strain. She arrived in Brazil on the 21st, after a trip to South Africa.
According to the Municipal Health Department, the patient contracted the delta variant.
The government of Minas Gerais also ruled out this Friday the possibility of infection with the omicron variant in a 33-year-old patient hospitalized in Belo Horizonte. She passed through the Republic of Congo and tested positive for Covid-19.
In a note, the Minas Gerais Health Department informs that the genetic sequencing is closer to the B.1.640 lineage, previously identified in France, Republic of Congo, Ghana, Italy, England, Spain and the United States.
The B.1.640 lineage is, to date, not classified by the WHO (World Health Organization) as a variant of interest (VOI) or variant of concern (VOC).
The folder also informed that she was admitted on the 29th at the Hospital Eduardo de Menezes and presents a good evolution in her health condition. The woman claimed not to have been vaccinated against Covid.
On Thursday (2), the Federal District government announced the confirmation of two cases of Covid-19 by the omicron variant. These are two men aged 40 to 49 years who passed through South Africa. Both were vaccinated with three doses of vaccine against the new coronavirus.
According to the DF government, they are residents of Brasília and were on the same flight as a traveler from Guarulhos (SP) who had the case of omicron confirmed on Wednesday (1). They landed at Guarulhos airport on Saturday (27). Then residents of the federal capital took a flight home.
The resident of Guarulhos is a 28-year-old man who was previously in Ethiopia. Even before the genomic sequencing result, which attested to being the omicron variant, he was already isolated, since his test for Covid-19 was positive.
According to the health department, he had already been vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
The first two of the new variant in the country were announced on Tuesday (30). They were initially analyzed by the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and later confirmed by the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, linked to the government of São Paulo.
The two patients are Brazilian missionaries who live in South Africa and are visiting São Paulo. The couple — a 41-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman— were also immunized. According to information from the city of São Paulo, they are isolated in the home of relatives in the city of São Paulo.
