Nine out of ten don’t get enough sleep, according to the study, which increases cardiovascular risk.
People who sleep well are at less risk of heart attack the strokeshows a new French scientific study, presented at the international conference of the European Society of Cardiology in Barcelona.
Nine out of ten don’t get enough sleep, according to the study, which increases cardiovascular risk. Scientists estimate that seven out of ten of these cardiovascular events could be avoided if people slept well.
“The importance of sleep quality and quantity to heart health is something that should be taught early in life when healthy behaviors are being established. Minimizing nighttime noises and stress at work can help improve sleep.” said the lead researcher dr Abubakari Nabiema of the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM) in Paris.
The study involved 7,200 people aged 50 to 75 (mean age 62, 62% men) without cardiovascular disease at baseline. Each was scored from 0 to 5 based on the quality and quantity of their sleep. As an ideal state 5 (only 10% of people had it) seven to eight hours of sleep per night, no or very rare insomnia, no sleepiness the next morning and waking up early in the morning were considered.
Almost the same percentage (8%) had those who had the worst sleep and scored zero. Each person’s cardiovascular status was checked every two years for a total of ten years, during which 274 had coronary heart disease or stroke.
It found that cardiovascular risk decreased by 22% for every one unit increase in one’s sleep quantity and quality score. So, compared to those with a sleep score of 0 or 1, those with a 5 had a 75% lower risk of heart attack or stroke. It was estimated that if all study participants were rated as having excellent sleep (5), 72% of new cases of coronary heart disease and stroke could be avoided each year.
Dr. Nabiema stated that “Our study shows the potential of good sleep to maintain heart health and that improved sleep is associated with lower risks of coronary heart disease and stroke. We also found that the vast majority of people have difficulty sleeping. With cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death worldwide, greater awareness is needed of the importance of good sleep in maintaining a healthy heart.”
