At 66 cases of monkey pox in Greece

Eight new cases were detected in the last week.

The total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox since the start of registration is 66 (all male, median age: 37 years (19-61), of whom 20 reported travel abroad within of the incubation period of the disease (30%), according to the EODY.

In previous report a total of 58 cases were recordedwhich means that eight new cases were detected in the last week.

It is noted that the recorded laboratory-confirmed cases have already recovered or are recovering in a generally good clinical condition. The data presented in the EODY report concern the laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox virus infection in Greece, based on the data declared to the EODY and recorded until September 8, 2022.

Monkeypox is a viral infection first recognized in 1958. Since then, it has been occurring in tropical regions of West and Central Africa. It is transmitted through contact with wild animals and from human to human through close physical contact.

In May 2022, an increased number of monkeypox cases were recorded in non-endemic countries. In total, in Europe, until September 6, 2022, 23,196 cases of the disease were recorded in 43 different countries.
