It will be held at the Caravel Hotel on September 16-17, 2022, with the participation of distinguished and experienced speakers in the specific field of Cardiology.
The scientific and clinical work proves to be beneficial for the doctor and especially the hospital when it is combined with continuous educational activity. Due to this fact, the creation and implementation of Educational programs and Conferences is required with the aim of continuous, multidimensional and up-to-date information. Its realization also has such a goal Annual Two-Day Conference of the Cardiology Clinic of the “ELPIS” Hospital with subject matter: “Heart failure and comorbidities: Diagnostic approach and treatment options”which will be held at Caravel Hotel September 16-17, 2022, with the participation of distinguished and experienced speakers in the specific field of Cardiology.
Cardiovascular diseases are a major health problem in the modern era since they are the first cause of death in modern western societies. In Europe, 49% of all deaths are from cardiovascular diseases, and of these 55% concern women and 43% men. Coronary artery disease accounts for approximately 50% of these deaths and almost 1/3 in A.E.E. Arrhythmias, valvular diseases, heart failure and other perhaps less common conditions also play an important role.
The development of science in general has been leaps and bounds in recent years. Especially in Medicine, new data are constantly emerging regarding the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms, the diagnostic approach, as well as the way to treat the various diseases. In Cardiology in particular, significant progress has been observed in a wide range concerning Coronary Disease, Valvular Diseases, Arrhythmias, Heart Failure. Often the new treatments proposed are disruptive, they come to shake up the waters and with new, often revolutionary, methods to greatly increase the success in dealing with many pathological conditions. Of course, dilemmas often arise regarding both the diagnosis and the applied treatment, which, however, through the scientific confrontation lead to the optimal treatment of the Cardiac patient.
At our conference, there will be detailed reference to the newest data that have emerged in recent years in the field of Heart Failure and concern the etiology, pathophysiology, better risk stratification of patients with Heart Failure, new diagnostic techniques with the application of new technologies and to the newest methods of treatment, whether pharmaceutical or invasive. The entry of newer drugs such as SGLT-2 inhibitors with the great reduction in cardiovascular events (up to 40% reduction in cardiac deaths) even in patients without heart failure and renal dysfunction is an important unit in the pharmaceutical quiver of these patients. With the participation of distinguished and experienced Cardiologists, specialized in the various fields of Cardiology, all the latest data will be discussed and an attempt will be made to analyze and clarify any dilemmas arising from the emerging knowledge and progress.
In more detail, as pointed out by Mr. Athanasios G. TrikasMD, FESC, FACC, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the Greek Academy of Sciences, Coordinating Director of the Cardiology Clinic of the GNA “ELPIS”, “we will refer to Coronary Artery Diseaseas the main cause for the occurrence of Heart Failure, the ways of investigating it, the methods and the necessity of checking the existence of viability, risk stratification as well as the modern ways of reperfusion of patients with Heart Failure and Coronary Artery Disease, either by percutaneous angioplasty or by coronary artery bypass grafting bypass (by-pass).
Arrhythmias that also accompany heart failure have a direct correlation with the degree of morbidity and mortality of these patients and the modern methods of treating them, mainly invasively in recent years but also with the use of newer devices, have significantly changed the landscape in the field this with significant benefits even with a reduction in the mortality of critically ill patients. Particular reference will be made to the newest methods of ablation of arrhythmias (cryocapture), both of atrial fibrillation, which is very common in patients with heart failure, and of dangerous ventricular arrhythmias.
Special mention will also be made in the field of valvular diseases, whether as causes or as a result of Heart Failure, leaps and bounds have also been observed in recent years. Transcutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI) operations are increasingly being performed, solving the problem of many moderate or high-risk patients who cannot undergo surgery, thus improving their quality of life and most importantly prolonging their survival. At the same time, severe mitral valve insufficiency, which is also common in patients with heart failure, is treated in many cases with percutaneous Mitral-clip placement intervention with great success, while very recently, percutaneous treatment methods for insufficiency and the tricuspid valve have also been developed.
There are also quite a few pathological conditions that coexist in patients with Heart Failure. Often the patients suffer from diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, malignancies, anemia, chronic respiratory failure, thyroid disorders, etc. Specialists in each section will develop the specifics in dealing with heart failure patients with coexisting diseases.
Finally, particularly important and topical, reference will be made to the effect of infections in general but also of the Covid-19 disease specifically on patients with heart failure, both in the acute phase and in the long term (post-Covid-19 or Long-Covid-19 syndrome and heart). A large number of them, over 40%, suffer from heart failure.”
