Government will charge 5-day quarantine for unvaccinated travelers

by

The Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government decided to require a five-day quarantine for unvaccinated travelers entering Brazil. Under the new rule, whoever presents the certificate of immunization can cross the border only with a negative test result for Covid.

The change was announced this Tuesday (7) by ministers Ciro Nogueira (Casa Civil), Marcelo Queiroga (Health) and Bruno Bianco (General Attorney of the Union) and contradicts Bolsonaro’s denial speech.

Hour earlier, at an event at the PalĂ¡cio do Planalto, the president compared the vaccine passport to a collar.

“That collar they want to put on the Brazilian people. Where is our freedom? I’d rather die than lose my freedom,” Bolsonaro said.

Unvaccinated travelers must be tested for Covid-19 on the fifth day of isolation. If the result is negative, they can circulate in Brazil.

There are still no details on how the quarantine of unvaccinated people will be organized and monitored. The government should publish an ordinance on Tuesday (7).

The government also decided to reopen the land borders to those who are vaccinated. It was not clear whether the rules will be the same for those who enter by land or flights. The ministers did not want to answer questions from the press.

as revealed to sheet, Anvisa suggested, on November 12, charging for vaccination or the imposition of quarantine on those who enter Brazil. Pressure for tighter border control increased with the discovery of the omicron variant.

In practice, the government accepted the core of Anvisa’s proposal, despite Bolsonaro’s denial rhetoric.

To get around Bolsonaro’s speech, the ministers avoided the term “vaccine passport” and emphasized that non-immunized people have the option of being quarantined in Brazil. On the fifth day, if they test negative for Covid, they are released.

“In this context that we are stalked by the omicron variant, which we do not yet know the full potential, (we will) require that unvaccinated individuals comply with a five-day quarantine. And after this quarantine they would perform a test, being negative, they could normally, in the case of foreigners, enjoy all the beauties of our great Brazil,” said Queiroga.
