Doria reserves stopped doses of Coronavac for use in children aged 3 to 11 years

by

Governor João Doria (PSDB) announced this Wednesday (8) that he has reserved 12 million doses of Coronavac to be applied to children aged 3 to 11 years. These are vaccines that are stopped after being refused by the Ministry of Health.

There is still no authorization in the country for the application of any immunizing agent in this age group. The Butantan Institute stated that it sent a new request for evaluation to Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).

The federal government’s refusal was disclosed on Monday night (6) and surprised the São Paulo government. The institute’s director, Dimas Covas, criticized the decision.

“The Ministry of Health makes a mistake once again with the refusal. The denial minister [Marcelo Queiroga] uses arguments that are not valid to once again disqualify the vaccine, as it did several times in the last year,” said Covas.

According to Covas, if the use of Coronavac in children is approved, Brazil could start a movement that is already taking place in other countries. “The world is making this movement to vaccinate children and adolescents and we also need to start.”
