22 deaths were recorded in patients infected with the virus, while last week there were 19 deaths
A small increase compared to last week was recorded in the number of deaths from the West Nile virus, while from the previous weekly report until today, diagnosed – declared 19 new cases of which 7 are hospitalized in ICU.
Specifically, in the last week they were recorded 22 deaths in patients with virus infection and with manifestations from the Central Nervous System, aged over 61 years. Two additional deaths of patients diagnosed with West Nile virus infection were attributed to other serious coexisting health problems. It is recalled that in last week’s report 19 deaths from the virus were recorded.
According to the weekly epidemiological report of EODY, 254 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed in Greece as a whole, of which 166 presented manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 88 had mild manifestations (e.g. febrile illness)/had no CNS manifestations.
The appearance of cases of infection by the virus, on an annual -almost- basis during the last decade indicates that the West Nile virus has settled in our country as well as in other European countries. Therefore, it was considered possible and expected that incidents would reoccur in the current period of 2022, during the period of circulation of mosquitoes, both in known and – possibly – in new areas, reports EODY.
In the period 2022, until 27/09/2022, cases of West Nile virus infection have been recorded in Greece, in settlements in the Metropolitan Unit of Thessaloniki and in the Regional Units of Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria, Halkidiki, Serres, Trikala, Larissa, Kavala, Drama and Fthiotida.
In the European Union and neighboring countries, during the period 2022, until 21/09/2022, cases of infection with the DN virus have been recorded – apart from our country – in: Italy, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Germany, Hungary , Croatia, Spain and Serbia.
Epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the timely implementation of appropriate integrated mosquito control programs and the adoption of personal protection measures against mosquitoes are the most appropriate measures to control the disease, notes the EODY.
