The City of São Paulo confirmed on Monday (26) the presence of an outbreak of meningitis in the east, between the neighborhoods of Vila Formosa and Aricanduva.
Five cases were reported, with one death. From January 1st to September 26th, 56 people had the disease in the capital, with nine deaths, according to information provided by TV.
The city is already offering vaccines to prevent the spread of the disease, as well as the necessary medication for the sick.
On the eve of the elections, it is necessary to compare the measures adopted for the current outbreak of meningitis and the epidemic, also of meningitis, observed in Brazil in the 1970s.
These were the times of the leaden years and the economic miracle, and the disclosure of the presence of an epidemic in our midst was a matter of national security. An easy problem to solve in the dictatorship: censorship in the media.
This way of controlling the news about the health of the population has undergone some changes in recent years.
It evolved with the creation of national denialists sabotaging the necessary vaccination campaigns for Covid-19.
However, there was a historic reaction from the medical profession and infectologists, who with the support of the media on the internet, TV and print, released the necessary clarifications to the population about the coronavirus.
For the current meningitis outbreak, the public is expected to be adequately informed.
