Majorkinis: One in three unvaccinated people over the age of 70 will be admitted to hospital if they become ill |

by

It is imperative that we all be vaccinated, stressed during the briefing on the pandemic, the assistant professor of epidemiology and member of the committee of experts, Gikas Majorkinis. There is a significant increase in the total number of new diagnoses, but also in deaths, while the pressure in the health system appears increased, with deteriorating tendencies.

Mr. Majorkinis, made special reference to the elderly, noting that about one in three over 70 years of age not vaccinated without underlying diseases, will be admitted to hospital if infected with the disease. If he has an underlying disease, this chance reaches the “tragic” 50% and at least one in seven of them will end up. “Vaccination reduces these chances 10 to 20 times. Instead of 50 to 100 in the hospital, two will end up,” said Mr Majorkinis. He called on unvaccinated citizens to make the “reasonable and safe choice. To be vaccinated”.

The situation in Europe, he said, seems to be deteriorating in a controlled and manageable way in countries with satisfactory vaccination levels. The epidemic is most prevalent in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, where vaccination coverage is much lower than in Western Europe. Mr Majorkinis cited Romania as an example with vaccination coverage of around 35% and Bulgaria as around 20%, saying the situation was reminiscent of dramatic images from previous phases of the pandemic.

Course of the pandemic in Greece

The total number of new diagnoses in the territory showed a significant increase. Specifically, 35% more diagnoses were recorded in the last week. The number of deaths showed a significant deterioration, with an increase of 19%.

The pressure in the health system appears increased, with deteriorating tendencies. The number of people monitored in the Intensive Care Units showed a large increase of 15%, while the number of new admissions with Covid, is much increased, with more than 350 per day. The ticket-ticket balance is greater than 1.5.

The course of the pandemic worldwide

To date, more than 248 million infections and more than 5 million deaths from Covid-19 have been reported worldwide. The new diagnoses increased significantly and about 423,500 diagnoses per day were recorded. The death rate showed a marginal decrease of 1% and was recorded at about 6860 per day.

The epidemic on a global scale, after two months, stopped shrinking, without showing significant signs of growth, said Mr. Majorkinis.

In Europe, by contrast, the epidemic continues to worsen for a sixth week. More specifically, the rate of new diagnoses increased by 8%, while the rate of deaths increased by 10%. Of the 47 European countries, 31 showed a worsening of the epidemiological situation. One in three European countries has a significant increase in the deterioration of the epidemiological situation.

Data for self-tests

Regarding the Public Health intervention for screening with antigenic self-tests, to date, about 63 million devices have been distributed to approximately 4.8 million citizens. 48.5 million electronic declarations have been made on the electronic platform. The total number of positives that have been confirmed in the control by health professionals, is 141,000.
