President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) again made unfounded accusations that the data on child deaths due to Covid-19 were inflated and added that hospitals changed disease codes to receive more resources from the federal government.
The representative said that there were “rare” cases of children dead as a result of infection with the new coronavirus. Official data, however, belie the President of the Republic.
“My daughter has not been vaccinated, she is 11 years old. Did someone, did any mayor ask me for children’s ICUs for Covid? No. Young people are asymptomatic. Has anyone seen a child die from Covid? said the president, during a live broadcast with women from Minas Gerais who support him.
“What happened in some cases is that a child arrived at the hospital with head trauma because he fell off his bike. And some hospitals maliciously used ‘Covid’, because I paid R$ 2,000 a day [para leitos de UTI para Covid-19], and another ICU was R$ 1,000. The child would die, then there would be Covid [como causa da morte]”, added the president.
Bolsonaro also defended during the transmission the medicines of the so-called Covid kit, which have been proven to be ineffective for the treatment of the disease. He also sought to reinforce his thesis by arguing that inmates did not die during the pandemic, as they took medicine for “boring”.
The participants of the broadcast were all declared supporters and, therefore, Jair Bolsonaro had space to defend his theses, without being questioned. He said he didn’t delay the purchase of vaccines, when documents from Covid’s CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) pointed out that the federal government ignored emails from Pfizer to deal with immunizers.
Bolsonaro also defended former minister and elected deputy Eduardo Pazuello for his role when the health system in Manaus collapsed, with patients who died of asphyxiation. As he has been doing, he stressed that the transport of oxygen by the Brazilian Air Force was an act of heroism.
