US President Joe Biden has called on Iran’s leaders to end violence against civilians in their country.

In a speech at a college in the city of Irvine, California, the US president said that women should have the right to wear “whatever they want”.

“Iran must end the violence against citizens who are simply exercising their fundamental rights,” Biden said, referring to the violent crackdown on protests that have rocked the country for a month after the death of 22-year-old Makhsa Amini.

The 22-year-old Iranian, of Kurdish origin, died three days after she was arrested by morality police in Tehran for what authorities said was a violation of the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women, which requires them to wear headscarves.

In his sternest warning since the protests erupted, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Friday that no one should dare to think he can uproot the Islamic Republic.

The demonstrations, involving people from all walks of life, have taken on the character of an uprising with slogans such as “Death to the Islamic Republic”.
