All SMS with the intangible referral have been sent to women aged 50-69 who have activated the intangible prescription – 17,605 women have been identified with benign findings, while for 5,104 women further screening was negative and no finding occurred, while 2,411 women have been identified timely with findings
October is breast cancer awareness and prevention month and early detection means treatment with minimally invasive techniques. As October 25 is designated as World Breast Cancer Prevention Day, the Ministries of Digital Governance and Health announce that all the referrals for digital mammography under the program have been issued “Preventive screening for breast cancer – Fofi Gennimata”.
Particularly:
• All SMS with the intangible referral have been sent to women aged 50-69 who have activated the intangible prescription.
• About 40,000 mammograms have already been performed
• 17,605 women have been identified with benign findings, while for 5,104 women the further screening was negative and no finding occurred.
• 2,411 women have been identified early with findings. These women, thanks to the preventive examinations of the screening program, detected the findings in time and the majority of them do not need a mastectomy or chemotherapy.
It is recalled that the program “Preventive screening for breast cancer – Fofi Gennimata” was presented by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and was put into operation in June 2022. The program was designed by the General Secretary of Public Health Irini Agapidakis and is implemented by the National Service Provision Organization of Health (EOPYY) and the Electronic Governance of Social Security (IDIKA SA), a supervised body of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
The program “Preventive screening for breast cancer – Fofi Gennimata” is aimed at all women aged 50-69 who are in our country and have AMKA – that is, it concerns a total of 1,300,000 beneficiaries – and, incorporating digital technology , seeks to make it easier for women to get their tests done easily, instantly and for free. The program does not stop with the free digital mammography examination, but also provides for both a free visit to the doctor for those women identified with findings and a free ultrasound to further clarify the findings. Thus, the program includes the following exams:
1. Digital Mammography examination for all eligible women
2. Clinical examination (if found)
3. Ultrasound (if found)
The program works as follows:
• Women – beneficiaries aged 50-69 who have activated the immaterial prescription will receive the immaterial referral for the digital mammography examination by text message (SMS) to their mobile phone or by e-mail. With the intangible referral, they can go to any collaborating center in their area (public or private) and make an appointment for the exam, without any financial burden.
• Those women who have not activated the immaterial prescription, can ask during their visit to any doctor or health unit they visit to issue them the relevant referral and then turn to any collaborating center in their area (public or private ) and make an appointment for the examination, without any financial burden.
The Minister of Health Thanos Plevris said: “We run the largest screening program there is. Women with a direct referral can have breast cancer screenings while allowing for further free clinical screening by the doctor and tests they will need.’
The Minister of State and Digital Governance Kyriakos Pierrakakis said: “In less than five months, the “Fofi Gennimata” program has become an ally of all women aged 50-69. Taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the immaterial prescription, we are able to send each beneficiary the referral, so that she can schedule her mammogram for free, whenever and wherever it suits her. Through this process, which we will soon extend to other diseases, we succeed in bringing the state to the citizen, with personalized proposals and solutions.”
