Recommendation for vaccination of children with underlying diseases aged 6 months to 4 years – New mutations are not a new virus, but part of Omicron – Recommendation for vaccination of the population, both for coronavirus and influenza

The president of the national vaccination committee, Maria Theodoridou, and the general secretary of primary health care, Marios Themistokleous, held an emergency briefing on the developments regarding the progress of the pandemic in Greece and the vaccination of the population.

Maria Theodoridou stated:

“In September we mentioned the updated coronavirus vaccines. The basic and main goal is to boost immunity to prevent severe illness and death. The protection they offer is a matter of continuous research and mainly about how our body reacts. The body reacts to antigens. Nature publishes a very optimistic study, according to which updated vaccines can also deal with the new mutations.

According to the WHO, the new variants are, not a new virus, but a part of the Omicron mutation. It is not currently useful to upgrade their importance.

The Commission has given an opinion on children positive for a first booster dose in those in high-risk groups, three months after the dose.

Cases in children increased. Serious complications are much less common with Omicron. Covid infection can lead to long covid.

The Commission considers that the risk to healthy children aged six months to four years is low. For children with underlying diseases or immunosuppression, the Committee recommends vaccination.”
