The transition team of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) chose four former ministers and a former secretary to join the technical group for Health.
The announcement was made by Senator Humberto Costa (PT-PE), one of the nominees to be part of the thematic coordination in the transition phase. A doctor, Costa was Minister of Health between 2003 and 2005, during Lula’s first government.
In addition to him, doctors Alexandre Padilha, Minister of Health in the first government of former President Dilma Rousseff (PT), between 2011 and 2014, are part of the group; José Gomes Temporão, Minister of Health in Lula’s second term; Arthur Chioro, also Dilma’s minister between 2014 and 2015, and David Uip, former secretary of Health in São Paulo during the government of Geraldo Alckmin, now vice president-elect.
The transition office, coordinated by Alckmin, is made up of 31 technical groups that will debate topics such as health, agriculture, social assistance, culture, economy, education, among others.
“I would like to thank President Lula for the invitation and the trust,” said Humberto Costa when announcing the thematic group. “Together with Temporão, Padilha, David Uip and Chioro, we will work to ensure that health in the new government becomes a priority again.”
According to the senator, the coordination will be collegiate and this week there will be a meeting to discuss strategic issues.
On the list of candidates to take over the Ministry of Health in the new Lula government, David Uip is close to Alckmin and currently holds the position of Secretary of Science, Research and Development in Health in the government of São Paulo.
Last week, the infectious disease specialist left the PSDB after 27 years of militancy in which he became the party’s biggest reference in the area. He made the decision because of the “bolsonarization” of the legend.
Uip coordinated the Covid-19 Contingency Center under João Doria, and led the resistance of doctors in São Paulo to the denialism of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
He was even attacked directly by the President of the Republic and had his personal prescription for medicines illegally disclosed on social networks when it came to Covid-19.
The name of Alexandre Padilha was already quoted to assume the Ministry of Finance in the future Lula government, but he lost strength by not being among the four chosen for the coordination of the economic area and now he has been nominated for the Health group.
