Vaccine passport will be required at border barriers with Argentina and Paraguay

by

Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) informed that physical barriers will be installed to control the flow of people on the Ponte da Amizade, which links Foz do Iguaçu to Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay, and on the Tancredo Neves Bridge, which links Foz do Iguaçu to Puerto Iguazú, in Argentina. Travelers must present proof that they are vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter Brazil.

The operation, which begins this Wednesday (15th), is being carried out with the Federal Police to expand the actions to verify the vaccination certificate of travelers entering the country through these borders.

The presentation of proof for travelers coming from abroad became mandatory after an injunction (provisional) granted by Luís Roberto Barroso, minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) last Saturday (11).

This means that all those entering the country through airports or land borders must present a vaccination certificate.

According to the determination, only those who come from countries that prove not to have available immunization agents or if they prove that they did not receive the application for medical reasons, are exempt from presenting the document.

In the decision, he cited the emergence of omicron, a new variant of the disease that represents a very high risk, according to the WHO (World Health Organization).

After this determination, Anvisa said it would require a vaccination certificate at airports and land borders.

Border residents of the so-called “twin cities” are exempt from presenting proof of vaccination at the land borders of Paraguay and Argentina, that is, cities whose territories border neighboring countries.

“It is important that these residents are able to prove their condition through a document, such as a proof of address. Freight transport workers are also exempt from presenting proof of vaccination”, highlighted the regulatory agency, in a note.

The Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government has not yet published an ordinance to adapt to the injunction.

Like leaf showed, after Anvisa informed that it would require a vaccination certificate, the determination was partially fulfilled at Guarulhos International Airport, in Greater São Paulo.

Although most passengers have to present the document, some still managed to enter the country this Tuesday (14) without showing it.

Anvisa said that it performs a sample approach to passengers to verify proof of vaccination and other necessary documents.
