Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: Children should also be vaccinated against Covid

by

Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) authorized vaccination against Covid for children from 5 years of age, with the Pfizer vaccine. Soon, Coronovac may also be authorized.

Deniers reject this important decision for the benefit of future generations of Brazilians.

A study carried out in Canada on the relationship between age and the transmission of Covid-19 in a family environment found, based on 6,280 households, 1,717 cases of transmission of the virus from children to adults. The research, by Lauren A. Paul and colleagues, was published in the journal Jama Pediriatrics.

Speaking to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, considered the country’s leading public health expert, declared that childhood vaccinations aim to protect children themselves.

Although more dangerous for adults, the disease can also cause long-term complications and symptoms in young people.

He stressed that “it is not important to vaccinate children for Israel. It is important for children. We are not vaccinating children to control the pandemic.”

Despite the unlikelihood of contracting serious illness like adults, minors are at risk of contracting pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome or developing health problems in the future, said Alroy-Preis.

So even if the long Covid-19 may reach only 1% of children, there will be thousands at risk of long-term health problems, according to the Israeli expert.

Her two children have already been vaccinated.
