Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: One less threat

by

The outbreak of Mpox, the monkeypox, is ceasing to be a threat to the population, all over the world. (The coronavirus pandemic is still alive and active and is caused by another type of virus, which is why health authorities recommend maintaining the use of face masks and avoiding crowds).

According to data from the WHO (World Health Organization), the drop in the number of patients affected by Mpox started to be noticed in the United States in the last week of last month.

From the beginning of the outbreak to November 27, almost 30,000 patients were confirmed in the US; in Brazil, 9,905 cases were reported.

The CDC (United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) currently reports less than ten daily cases of Mpox.

Experts say that the reduced daily rate of new cases was achieved through vaccination and guidance on appropriate behavior among people at high risk of contracting the disease.

In Brazil, the activities of the Ministry of Health’s situation room monitored Mpox-related cases from May to July this year.

On July 11, the activities of the situation room were closed, and problems related to Mpox were taken over by the chronic diseases and sexually transmitted infections sector.

Formerly called monkeypox, this virus was changed to Mpox to avoid stigmata in male patients. And, mainly, because the name is inappropriate, since monkeys are not the smallpox virus reservoir.
