Three more children have been confirmed to have died from an infection caused by the Strep A bacteria in the UK since September.

Latest figures from the Health Protection Service show that a total of 19 children have lost their lives due to the bacteria, which in some cases can cause a serious infection.

Sixteen of the minor victims lived in England, while the remaining three deaths occurred in Northern Ireland and Wales.

In England there have also been 58 deaths of adults from strep since the autumn.

Meanwhile, health authorities have activated protocols for administering alternative types of penicillin to treat strep infections due to problems reported by pharmacists in supplying the key antibiotic used against the bacterium.
