Confrontation between Georgiadis and Zachariadis in the Parliament regarding the conviction of Imamoglou

by

The ND minister accused the SYRIZA MP of “theatre”

The condemnation of the mayor of Constantinople Ekrem Imamoglou criticized from the floor of the Parliament, the Minister of Development ‘Adonis Georgiades and the head of the Interior Department of SYRIZA, Kostas Zachariadis. A confrontation, however, occurred between the two politicians, when Mr. Georgiadis spoke of “theater” Zachariadis, as, as he said, he represents a party that has P. Polakis in its ranks, who had said “let’s close 2- 3 in prison to win the elections. For his part, Mr. Zachariadis spoke of “toxic segregation” and indecency at the expense of Mr. Imamoglou.

Speaking on the 2023 state budget, Mr. Zachariadis had expressed his solidarity with the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, saying that in democratic states, political leaders are not sentenced to prison and ban policies because of their ideas. The politics of fear must be defeated. This is how authoritarian regimes work, with prisons, terrorism, surveillance…

Asking for the floor after Zachariadis’ speech, the Minister of Development said: “The theater is nice for Imamoglou, but it doesn’t catch on. [..] You would have had the right to talk about Mr. Imamoglou, if you had reacted to Mr. Polakis, when he said to put two or three in prison to win the prisons. So leave Mr. Imamoglou alone and the Democracy you supposedly love, noted Mr. Georgiadis.

In response, Mr. Zachariadis said: I would not have taken the floor if I did not consider that you are insulting this room, by acting as ErdoÄŸan’s minion, insulting and contradicting the support and solidarity that I wanted to express from the floor of the Parliament to the mayor of Istanbul. I want to believe that in these issues opposition and government “we must be together, because this is the patriotic responsibility and patriotic duty. You have chosen to put in this issue also, the toxic separation. I call on you to correct this enormous indecency and for the mayor of Istanbul but also for all those persecuted in Turkey’s political system because they have suffered torture by the Erdogan regime,” said the MP SYRIZA.

Responding, Mr. Georgiadis condemned “with absolute severity” the decision against Mr. Imamoglou: “I declare that everything you said is valid in a Republic. With the difference that you in SYRIZA cannot say it. And, now, you condemn the Polaki’s phrase “let’s put two or three in jail to win the elections”. Do you dare? “Well, leave the fools to me” said the Minister of Development.
