However, it remains vital to protect vulnerable groups, said the head of the virology department at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin and adviser to the federal government, Christian Drosten.

The head of the Department of Virology of the Charité University Hospital in Berlin and advisor to the federal government Christian Drosten stated earlier this evening that the coronavirus pandemic is over and that we are currently “experiencing the first endemic wave of the SARS-CoV-2 virus”. The Minister of Health and Professor of Epidemiology Karl Lauterbach (SPD) also appeared in agreement with the distinguished professor’s assessment, who however warned that “the immediate lifting of all measures would be careless”.

Mr Drosten “is right that we have gone into the endemic situation of coronavirus waves, which now only affect parts of the population”, said Mr Lauterbach, while stressing that it remains vital to protect vulnerable groups of the population, using mask or isolation. “Clinics are full, their staff are overworked, there are many deaths and winter is not over,” added the Minister of Health and explained that the permanent disappearance of the pathogen is unlikely, despite protective measures and vaccinations, and thus the virus will return always, but probably long-term with only mild symptoms.

Liberal (FDP) Justice Minister Marco Busman, reacting to Mr. Drosten’s statements, requested for his part the immediate abolition of all protective measures for the coronavirus. “Christian Drosten was one of the most careful scientists during the pandemic and now his conclusion is that the pandemic is over and we are in an endemic situation. As a political consequence, we will have to remove the last protection measures,” said Mr Bushman. It is currently up to state governments to decide what measures to apply in each region, so regulations vary from state to state.
