The Emmy nominee revealed her sobriety in December 2021
In People magazine, which will be released on January 9, Drew Barrymore gives a “soul testimony” and talks about the long period of her life when alcohol was her companion after the divorce.
Drew Barrymore says her 2016 divorce from Will Kopelman played a big role in her sobriety journey.
The actress told People in an interview published Tuesday that she was “broken” after the “harsh” breakup.
“It just really threw me off,” the “Drew Barrymore Show” host recalled, after admitting that drinking helped her “soothe the pain” of the breakup.
“I was just trying to … feel good – and alcohol did that for me,” explained the 47-year-old, who previously struggled with addiction as a child.
“Drinking was a daily habit that I couldn’t change. You feel weak and unable to do what is best for you. I kept believing I was going to make it,” she continued, crediting her victory against abuse to daughters Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8.
“The life I planned for my children didn’t work out … it was a messy, painful, excruciating journey through the fire and back to life,” Barrymore said.
The Emmy nominee revealed her sobriety in December 2021, telling “CBS This Morning” viewers that she had been abstinent from alcohol for two and a half years.
