Rector of AUTh-Sewage: De-escalation in viral load – The new method that will detect Omicron

by

The Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikos Papaioannou, spoke of “a crack of light”, referring to the epidemiological picture from the sewage of Thessaloniki. “Recently, in the last 20 days, we have seen a relative de-escalation in the concentration of the viral load. However, even this declining concentration is at very high levels, which means that we have increased dispersion “, stressed the rector, emphasizing that much attention is still needed, especially these days. “It will be good during the holidays, when we will be with our families, friends and relatives, without anyone forcing us to take a test, so that when we meet, we can be sure that even if we do not want to be a link in the chain “, noted Mr. Papaioannou.

Regarding the Omicron mutation, Mr. Papaioannou pointed out that it is still being studied, however, clarifying that “it is clear that it has increased transmissibility”. He also noted that these days the AUTh team is developing a very innovative method and is now standardizing it, so that in addition to the sequence, which as in previous mutations must take a few days, has developed a methodology that can immediately, within a day to also detect the Micron mutation. “But this is something that comes in the second stage. “What matters is this de-escalation that we see continuing to exist, so it means that we are doing something right and that we continue to do it”, he stressed and added that he does not know if there is a case of Omicron in Thessaloniki. The Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki referred to three pillars that must be considered in relation to the Omicron mutation.

The first is related to the morbidity and mortality of the unvaccinated. The second is the possibility that vaccines provide, the second dose and especially the third dose and the third case is what causes the re-infection with the mutation. “These are three pillars that are under constant study because they are something that quickly appeared. “What remains is the increased transmissibility”, pointed out Mr. Papaioannou.

Regarding the vaccination in the universities, the rector of AUTh made it known that at the level of students nationwide, 86% of the population is vaccinated and at the level of faculty members over 95%.
