Tzanakis: Hospitals should be prepared to deal with flu cases

Hospitals will be under a lot of pressure in the next period as 300-350,000 cases of flu are expected per week

About the “tsunami” of flu expected in the next three weeks in our country, Professor Nikos Tzanakis spoke on the show “Today” on SKAI, stressing that with these data hospitals are required to draw up a “special pressure program” for the estimated cases to accept.

The professor estimated that flu cases will reach 300-350,000 per week, however, he emphasized that there is no need to panic as “the health system is tested since last year we had 70,000 cases of coronavirus per day, while now we have to manage 40-45,000 cases of flu”.

Regarding the lack of medicines, Mr. Tzanakis noted that at the hospital where he works in Heraklion, the only shortage observed so far concerns paracetamol in injectable form. “Without panic, with proper management and choice of generics we can escape this difficulty,” he noted.

Regarding the current situation regarding the coronavirus, the professor of pulmonology, when asked about it, said: “If I were to pass one of the viruses that are circulating, at this stage I would prefer the coronavirus”, explaining that now the viruses and cases of influenza are more seriously as they even cause pneumonia.

Finally, Mr. Tzanakis recommended the use of masks for the entire population as well as proper personal hygiene.
