The sub-variant “Kraken” also in Greece – Increase for 2nd week in imports with Covid

Another 149 people died in the last week due to Covid, to 128 those intubated with coronavirus – Nine deaths in total, since the beginning of the epidemic, from flu

The detection of the “Kraken” sub-variant in Greece as well, with three confirmed cases, announced the EODY, in the weekly report on respiratory infections. At the same time, hospital admissions with Covid patients increased for the 2nd week.

In more detail, the EODY report for the last week states:

Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)

✓ a small decrease compared to the previous week was recorded in the community
✓ the decrease applied to all age groups, with the exception of the 15-64 year old group

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

✓ the number of admissions for COVID-19 showed a slight increase compared to the previous week
✓ the number of new intubations did not show a significant change
✓ the number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 128
✓ 149 deaths were recorded with a median age of 85 years (range 51-98)
✓ the BA.5 sub-variant is still the most common Omicron sub-variant
✓ the percentage ratio of the sub-variant BQ.1.1 shows an increase in relation to the rest of the sub-variants of the strain BA.5
✓ among BA.2 strains, the most frequently recognized sub-variant is BA.2.75 followed by the XBB sub-variant
✓ sub-variant XBB.1.5 has been detected in a total of 6 samples (3 of them were obtained by back-checking the samples of the XBB sub-variant from previous weeks)
✓ surveillance of viral load in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARSCoV2 virus circulation in 3 of the 6 areas tested

Influenza virus

✓ flu positivity in the community has decreased
✓ 7 new serious cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were recorded, involving ICU patients and 2 new deaths in the week of 01/2023
✓ in total, from week 40/2022 to week 01/2023, 36 people with flu were hospitalized in ICU and 9 deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed flu were recorded
✓ in total, from week 40/2022 to week 01/2023, 221 samples positive for influenza viruses were detected, of which 218 (99%) were type A strains and 3 (1%) were type B strains
✓ of the 215 type A strains, 209 (97%) were classified as subtype A(H3N2) and 6 (3%) as subtype A(H1N1)pdm09

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV

✓ positivity did not show a significant change compared to the previous week in a sample from mass sampling in the community (non-sentinel samples)

New arrivals of COVID-19

The total of new patient admissions to the territory’s hospitals for COVID-19 in the week of 01/2023 was 1,632 (+7% weekly change). Average daily admissions for the week were 233.

New COVID-19 intubations

In total, the number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection in the territory is 128 (last updated 09/01/2023).

Surveillance of deaths from COVID-19 infection

In the week of 01/2023, 149 deaths of COVID-19 patients were recorded (+2% weekly change).

The median age of those who died was 85 years (range 51-98). 100% of those who died had an underlying disease and/or were 70 years of age or older.

Subvariants of Omicron

Regarding the temporal evolution of the sub-variants of the BA.5 strain, in week 39 the sub-variant BQ.1 appeared and then BQ.1.1., which shows an increase in relation to the rest of the sub-variants of the BA strain .5 (Chart 13). Among BA.2 strains, at week 51, the most frequent sub-variant remains BA.2.75, with the XBB sub-variant accounting for approximately 40% of BA.2 samples (Figure 14).

The XBB.1.5 sub-variant has been detected in a total of 6 samples in our country. Three of these came from back-checking the XBB sub-variant samples from the previous weeks.

Surveillance of severe cases of influenza

In the week of 01/2023, 7 new serious cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were recorded, with hospitalization in the ICU. They are 4 men and 3 women from 2 to 72 years old and a median age of 66 years.

In total, from week 40/2022 to week 01/2023, 36 people were hospitalized with flu in the ICU.

Surveillance of influenza deaths

From week 40/2022 to week 01/2023, 9 deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza have been recorded. They are 3 men and 6 women (age range: 41-90 years, median age: 79 years).
