How much does the possibility of Omicron hospitalization decrease? New British study responds

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

Carriers of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus are significantly less likely to develop severe symptoms, according to the first analysis of real data by the UK State Health Insurance Agency (UKHSA).

The initial results of the analyzes show a 30-45% lower probability of having to go to the hospital emergency department compared to the Delta carriers and a 50-70% lower probability of being admitted to the hospital.

The findings are not very different from those of Imperial College London and the Universities of Edinburgh and Strathclyde in Scotland.

However, the UKHSA notes that the analyzes largely concern Omicron operators under the age of 40, as they constitute the vast majority. Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during the advanced years, over 60 years of age, when symptoms may be more severe. For this reason further data and analyzes are required.

The study also notes that protection from the booster dose against simple infection decreases after a period of time, with the result that at ten weeks the protection is reduced by 15-25%.

However, protection from the booster dose against a serious infection is believed to last longer.

And the UKHSA warns that the increased transmission of Omicron could lead to a large number of patients who will need treatment in the coming weeks.

Health Minister Sajid Javid described the finding as encouraging, although he noted that cases and hospitalizations were on the rise. He commented that it is “early to determine the next steps”.
