Municipality of Athens: Free examinations for the prevention of breast, cervical and prostate cancer through Municipal Clinics throughout February

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, on February 4, the Municipality of Athens, through the Directorate of Municipal Clinics and Public Health, organizes the “Prevention and Health Month”, providing free – throughout February – preventive examinations in collaboration with the School of Medicine of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Hellenic Urological Society and the Association of Friends of the General Oncology Hospital “Agioi Anargyroi”.

Taking part in the international prevention and information campaign aimed at fighting cancer, which is also the most frequent cause of death after cardiovascular diseases, the Municipality of Athens is giving this February the opportunity to all those who wish to schedule examinations, especially for women they concern the prevention of breast and cervical cancer and for men the prevention of prostate cancer.

“For one more year we strongly support the international campaign that aims to raise awareness and above all contribute to the prevention of cancer. With health as a priority, we have continued for the last three years to upgrade our Municipal Clinics, strengthening their services with free preventive medicine programs for everyone. At the same time, we are staffing the Clinics with more specialized staff, enabling more and more of our citizens to have access to valuable primary care”, emphasizes the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, in a statement.

For his part, the Deputy Mayor of Public Health and Municipal Clinics, Manolis Kalambokas, says: “It is an opportunity to remind all our fellow citizens that they should include regular preventive check-ups in their lives, love and take care of themselves more , to replace fear of disease with health-promoting choices. We dedicate our actions in February entirely to the fight against cancer. The “Prevention and Health Month” in our Municipal Clinics should convey a message of awareness and optimism, that cancer is no longer an incurable disease if it is diagnosed in time”

Those interested can schedule the following exams in February, by phone appointment, which will be held weekly:

Breast Cancer Screening: Clinical examination by a specialist doctor at the Municipal Dispensaries, which includes taking a history, evaluation of previous breast examinations, prescription of tests, prevention counseling, as well as planning of biopsies, operations or specialized control at the cooperating Attikon and Hippocrates Hospitals, in case this is deemed necessary.

Clinical examinations will take place at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th Municipal Clinics, according to the following schedule and by appointment only:

Digital Mammography: The digital mammography check will be carried out free of charge in the building of the Association of Friends of the General Oncology Hospital “Agioi Anargyroi” (Tirinthos 2, in Ano Patisia), on Wednesday 15/2.

For the mammogram appointment, those interested can call: 210-2015510 ext. 119-120 (Monday – Friday | 08:30-14:00). Appointments will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis.

Screening for Cervical Cancer: Complete clinical examination by a specialist gynecologist at the Municipal Clinics, which includes history taking, evaluation of previous examinations, Pap test, prescription of necessary examinations and referral for specialized examination, if required, to the cooperating 2nd Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic of EKPA, at Aretaiio Hospital.

Test for prostate cancer: Clinical examination by a specialized urologist at the Municipal Clinics, which includes evaluation of tests, prescription of new tests, as well as referral for further consultation.
