SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection
✓ positivity in all tested samples decreased compared to the previous week
✓ the number of admissions for COVID-19 showed a decrease
✓ the number of new intubations showed a decrease
✓ the number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 135
✓ 169 deaths were recorded with a median age of 85 years (range 32-100)
✓ the BA.5 sub-variant is still the most common Omicron sub-variant
✓ the percentage of sub-variant BQ.1.1 increased in relation to the remaining sub-variants of BA.5
✓ the most frequent sub-variant of BA.2 remains BA.2.75 with a percentage of 46%, the sub-variant CH.1.1 corresponds to a percentage of approximately 27% of BA.2 strains, while the sub-variant XBB follows with a percentage of 13%

Influenza virus

✓ from week 40/2022 to week 04/2023, 57 people with flu were hospitalized in ICU and 17 deaths were recorded
✓ during the same period, 257 samples positive for influenza viruses (sentinel samples and hospital samples) were recorded in the two influenza reference centers, of which 252 (98%) were type A strains and 5 (2%) were type B strains
✓ of the 251 type A strains, 241 (96%) were classified as subtype A(H3N2) and 10 (4%) as subtype A(H1N1)pdm09

New arrivals of COVID-19

The total of new patient admissions to the territory’s hospitals for COVID-19 in the week of 04/2023 was 1,112 (-28% weekly change). The average daily number of admissions for the week was 159.

New COVID-19 intubations

The number of new COVID-19 intubations in the week of 04/2023 was 48. This was a 17.2% decrease compared to the average weekly number of new intubations over the previous 4 weeks (weekly average, weeks 52/2022-03/2023: 58).

The median age of the patients was 76 years (range: 11-96), while 98% had an underlying disease and/or were 70 years or older.

In total, the number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection in the territory is 135 (last updated 01/31/2023).

Surveillance of severe cases of influenza

In the week of 04/2023, 2 new serious cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza type A were recorded, with hospitalization in ICU. They are 1 man and 1 woman, 7 and 68 years old.

In total, from week 40/2022 to week 04/2023, 57 people were hospitalized with flu in the ICU.

Surveillance of deaths from COVID-19 infection

In the week of 04/2023, 169 COVID-19 deaths were recorded. A 4% decrease was recorded compared to the average weekly number of deaths over the previous 4 weeks (average weekly number of deaths, weeks 52/2022-03/2023:176). The median age of those who died was 85 years (range 32-100). 99% of those who died had an underlying disease and/or were 70 years or older.
