The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, criticized the states that said they will not ask for a prescription to vaccinate children aged 5 to 11 in Brazil.
“As far as I know, the vast majority of them are not doctors. So they are interfering with their state and municipal secretariats,” said the minister in a conversation with journalists at the door of the Ministry of Health.
Last week, the minister said that the ministry would recommend the authorization of vaccination with the immunizing agent from Pfizer, as long as there is a medical prescription and parental consent for the application.
The immunizing agent from Pfizer has already been authorized by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) for this age group.
On the same day, the folder released an online public consultation document for the population to give their opinion on childhood vaccination. The consultation will be available on the official website of the folder until January 2nd.
After that, the ministry will decide on the adhesion of children of this age group to the PNI (National Immunization Program).
When asked about the reason for opening a public consultation given that this did not occur in other age groups, he declared that this was already a settled issue.
“This is an issue that has already been pacified, the ministry’s recommendation is there for all Brazilians to know, so that civil society can manifest itself. Public consultation is an instrument of democracy, it expands the discussion on the subject and will bring more tranquility for parents so they can take their children to the vaccination room freely to immunize against Covid-19,” he said.
The Ministry of Health released a statement on Monday (27) saying that the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years should start in January if the decision to vaccinate this public is maintained.
In the text, the folder still claims to be in favor of the vaccination of this public. However, the Minister of Health stressed that the decision depends on the outcome of the public consultation that is in progress.
“On January 5, after listening to the society, the folder will formalize its decision and, maintaining the recommendation, the immunization of this age group should start in January”, says the statement.
In the STF, there is a lawsuit filed by the PT that demands from the government a schedule of immunization of children. Rapporteur Ricardo Lewandowski ordered the government to present the vaccination plan for the age group on January 5th.
Lewandowski also ordered the Bolsonaro government to explain the decision to recommend the immunization of children by prescription.
A critic of vaccination in children is President Jair Bolsonaro himself. In recent weeks, he has raised suspicions about the safety of the immunizer. This week, the Chief Executive said his 11-year-old daughter Laura will not be vaccinated against Covid.
According to data from the Epidemiological Surveillance System for Influenza (SIVEP-Influenza), since the beginning of the pandemic until December 6 of this year, 301 deaths of children between 5 and 11 years were recorded by Covid.
In 2020, 2,978 children had severe acute respiratory syndrome due to the coronavirus—156 of them died. This year, there were 3,185 cases in this age group, with 145 deaths.
