France has become the sixth country in the world to count more than 10 million cases of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official figures released today.
French authorities announced today 219,126 new confirmed cases in 24 hours, in the fourth consecutive day that the country registers more than 200,000 infections.
France follows the United States, India, Brazil, Britain and Russia, counting more than 10 million cases.
Today’s report is the second highest to date after a record 232,200 infections yesterday, Friday, when French President Emmanuel Macron said the coming weeks would be difficult due to the recent resurgence of cases.
In his New Year’s address, Macron did not mention the need to impose tougher measures than has already been announced, adding that the government should avoid further restricting individual freedoms.
However, the government said earlier today that from Monday the use of the mask in public places will be mandatory for children from the age of 6 compared to 11 years ago.
Some major cities, including Paris and Lyon, have reintroduced the use of the mask on the streets for all citizens.
The seven-day moving average of new cases in France rose to an all-time record of 157,651 infections, nearly fivefold in one month.
At the same time, the number of covid-19 patients treated increased by 96 in the last 24 hours and reached a 7-month high of 18,811.
The death toll from the coronavirus rose by 110 in 24 hours to 123,851, the 12th highest death toll in the world. The seven-day moving average of new daily deaths reached 186, a high as of May 14th.
