The Ministry of Health directed the application of the third dose of immunizing agents against Covid-19 by Pfizer or AstraZeneca for anyone vaccinated with Coronavac who will travel internationally to countries that do not accept the product manufactured by the Butantan Institute.

It was also authorized to reduce the interval between the first and second dose of the vaccine for AstraZeneca to 28 days, and for Pfizer to 21 days. The methods of proof of travel are in charge of each state and municipality.

There is no age limit or target audience, and anticipation can be extended to family members such as fathers, mothers, children and spouses, as long as travel abroad is proven.

“States and municipalities will be able to assess the situations individually in order to find the best vaccine scheme, according to the availability of the immunogen, which guarantees protection and safety to the individual, based on scientifically supported national guidelines”, says the document.

The decision was published on October 22 and aims to guide the decision of states and municipalities on the anticipation of second and third doses of vaccine against Covid-19 based on regulatory criteria of the countries of destination of travelers. The note is signed by Rosana Leite Melo, extraordinary secretary of Confronting Covid-19.

“As this is an exception, the folder reiterates that what is agreed upon, in a tripartite manner, between the Union, states and municipalities is fulfilled so that the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 advances uniformly throughout the country and that do not apply doses in disagreement with what is agreed,” says the Ministry of Health, in a statement.

The government of the state of São Paulo adopted the guidance of the Ministry of Health, but had already anticipated the second dose of Pfizer for all adults since October 18th. Through the State Department of Health, states that the municipalities are responsible for implementing and complying with the PEI (State Immunization Plan) .

The capital, in addition to complying with the guidelines of the state administration, also authorized travelers who have taken only the first dose of Coronavac to receive other immunizing agents as a second dose, respecting the interval of 28 days for AstraZeneca and 21 days for Pfizer.

To anticipate the doses in the city, it will be necessary to present the vaccination card with the previous doses, a proof of address in the city (if the previous doses have not been applied in the city), and the ticket issued by the air, land or port. The resident will also need to prove which immunizations are accepted in the destination country.

According to infectologist Renato Kfouri, director of SBIm (Brazilian Society of Immunizations), the decision is right because studies have already proven the effectiveness of vaccines in cases of interchangeability of manufacturers and in the intervals proposed by the Ministry of Health. Kfouri also highlights that it is a situation exception, only for people who have scheduled trips abroad.

“The recommendations are correct, obviously we have to take into account that this is not a routine situation, it is for people who have a proven need for travel, they will represent Brazil abroad,” he explains. “It was a necessary solution, an important demand for many Brazilians.”
