A big “life bridge” between Athens and Thessaloniki for four fellow human beings was set up today from the early hours of the morning, starting from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Erricos Dunan and the donation of organs from a 54-year-old patient who lost her own battle, after brain haemorrhage.

The family of the unfortunate patient, a mother of two minor children, who was found to be brain stem dead after the required clinical tests, took the brave decision to give the “gift of life” to other patients by donating her vital organs. This was followed by a long-hour operation to receive organs, which mobilized the medical and nursing staff of Henry Dunant, under the general supervision of the National Transplantation Organization (NTO), which also determined the selection of the recipients.

In particular, compatible patients were found for the heart (at the Onassios Cardiac Surgery Center), the liver (at the Hippocrates of Thessaloniki) and the kidneys of the unfortunate donor (with recipients of two compatible kidney patients hospitalized at the People’s Hospital of Athens and the Hippocrates of Thessaloniki).

Since the beginning of its operation, the ICU of Erricos Dunan has played a leading role in the field of transplants and body organ donation, contributing to the utilization of approximately 450 transplants that have given life to our fellow human beings.
