The mayor of São João da Barra (RJ), Carla Maria Machado dos Santos (PP), said this Wednesday (19) that if she had children, she would not take them for a vaccine against Covid-19.
During an almost hour-long live, the mayor – who claims to have not been vaccinated – spoke about the side effects of immunizations, casting doubts on their effectiveness and contradicting scientific evidence and the recommendation of medical entities such as the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP), among others. .
“I’m even on this live here, now that the vaccination of children begins, so I can ask mothers: look at the leaflet. Look at the leaflet properly. If I had a child, I wouldn’t vaccinate”, said Carla Machado.
For the SBP, childhood immunization “is an important strategy to reduce the number of deaths due to Covid-19 in this age group, in Brazil, whose indicators are more expressive than in other nations.
“So far, the studies carried out point to the efficacy and safety of the vaccine applied in the pediatric population, which is fundamental in the effort to reduce the severe forms of Covid-19”, says the entity.
Studies released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that serious reactions to the immunizer are extremely rare among children aged 5 to 11 years who received the Pfizer vaccine and that nearly all children who became seriously ill in six American cities had not been fully vaccinated.
Even so, the mayor of São João da Barra, a city close to the border with Espírito Santo, also recommended that parents consult doctors and alternative media before taking their children to be vaccinated.
“‘Take your child to the pediatrician first. Ask him to sign indicating the vaccine”, he proposed.
The requirement to present a medical prescription before immunization to children was even considered by the Ministry of Health, but it was discarded due to resistance from the state health secretariats.
After giving her health prescription, which includes warm water, propolis, meditation and 20 minutes of sun in the morning, the mayor also said that, “whether or not taking the vaccine, we continue to transmit and continue to be infected” with the coronavirus. .
“I have my doubts (about vaccination). It is a right that assists me”.
Research data and hospital occupancy data show that immunizers may not actually prevent contagion by coronavirus, but considerably reduce the chances of deaths and serious cases.
More than once, Carla Machado said that her personal choice did not harm others. Still according to her, there is no absolute truth, truth is relative. And “there are scientists who think the vaccine helps and there are others who think it doesn’t.”
The mayor said she did not reveal her decision before so as not to influence people. “Whether I take the vaccine or not, I don’t harm anyone. I didn’t comment openly before because I didn’t want to be an example for anyone”, he justified.
She said that the city government will provide a natural remedy to strengthen children’s immunity. According to the Rio government website, São João da Barra has 36,102 inhabitants (2019 data). The prefecture portal reports the occurrence of 5,152 cases of Covid in the municipality so far, with 176 deaths.
Speaking in lobbying of the pharmaceutical industry, the mayor repeated that it takes five years for the vaccine’s side effects to be proven. She said that, due to her attitude, she could become associated with President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), but that she does not even know who she will vote for in the next elections.
The mayor ended the live by suggesting that her followers focus on good things. Fear, he said, is harmful to health.
