by

Governor João Doria (PSDB) announced this Wednesday (26) the expansion of the number of beds for patients with Covid-19 in the state public network. According to Doria, there will be 700 more vacancies — 266 in the ICU and 434 in the ward.

The governor stated that vacancies are available until February 6th. “Because of the minor aggravation of the disease, so the primary beds are the main ones at this moment”, he said.

According to the state government, in relation to the ICU specifically, the increase in the number of beds is from 10% to 15%.

The State Secretary of Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, said that, in Greater SP, there will be 234 infirmary beds, plus 91 ICU vacancies. For the other regions, there will be 200 infirmary beds, another 165 in ICU and also the possibility of carrying out, with the municipalities, the co-financing of new spaces.

With the expansion of the omicron variant and high transmissibility, the occupancy rate of ICU beds grew and reached 68.7% in the state of São Paulo this Wednesday. In the previous week, between January 17 and 18, it was 54%, according to the Seade Foundation. In the capital, the current rate is 72% and in Greater São Paulo it is 73%.

According to Gorinchteyn, the state of São Paulo currently has 3,633 in the ICU and 7,324 in the wards — six of the 14 regions have more than 80% occupancy of intensive care beds. “There are almost 11,000 people admitted to hospitals. At the peak of the second wave, we had 13,150 people only in the ICU,” he said.

Gorinchteyn also said that in the last three weeks there has been a 152% increase in the number of hospitalizations. According to the state government, almost all contamination occurs through the ômicron variant.

In one week, the occupancy of ICU beds grew in 18 states and the Federal District. Eight units of the federation have 80% or more of public beds in use by coronavirus patients. In Rondônia, for example, the rate is 91%.

Also at the beginning of the week, the Ministry of Health extended the cost of adult and pediatric ICU beds for Covid-19 for another 30 days, following requests from the councils of state (Conass) and municipalities (Conasems) health secretaries. in addition to the National Forum of Governors.

The ministry announced the funding and maintenance of 14,254 beds spread across the country.

During the announcement of the expansion of the number of beds in São Paulo, the state government criticized, this Wednesday, the performance of the federal government. According to Doria’s management, the fact that the Ministry of Health pays only for occupied beds would discourage the maintenance of vacancies to meet the growing demand.

Vaccination

The state government also announced that 515,255 children aged 5 to 11 years in São Paulo have already been vaccinated, corresponding to more than 12% of the age group. According to the government, of every four children who received the vaccine in this group in Brazil, three are in the state of São Paulo.

“The moment is difficult, but vaccination and the use of a mask is important. It is the way we have to protect children now”, said the coordinator of the State Immunization Program, Regiane de Paula.

According to the government, there are 5,200 points, plus 364 state schools able to vaccinate children.

Vaccination takes place amid the expansion of the omicron variant. A study by the Instituto da Criança do Hospital das Clínicas shows that 43% of those infected in the age group from 8 to 18 years old suffer the prolonged effects of Covid in the 12 weeks following the infection.
