Infertility is no longer a “taboo” but a modern reality faced by hundreds of couples of all ages who wish to live the dream of having a child.
It is estimated that in Greece the percentage of infertile couples reaches 18-20% of the total population. A couple is considered to be infertile when they have not been able to conceive after 12 months of trying, while the interval is reduced to 6 months for women over 40.
In addition to the ramifications of the problem in psychology and the shaping of the couple’s everyday life, at the population level infertility is a key factor that reinforces the non-negotiable shrinking of the Greek population, which at an intense rate seemed to happen clearly, and unfortunately irreversibly, from 2013.
The aging of the population is therefore a fact. The low birth rate is a problem with a huge social impact, with the demographic threatening Greece, as the number of deaths is greater than the number of births, a phenomenon which seems to show increasing trends.
To talk with numbers, as shown by the latest census announced by ELSTAT, it seems that in the last decade the population of Greece decreased by 187,397, a percentage corresponding to 1.9% (9,716,889 in 2021 compared to 9,904,286 in 2011 ).
All this, in a society characterized by a change in priorities, as the new lifestyle with the demanding rhythms it imposes, leads young women to delay deciding to have a child.
The seriousness of the problem of subfertility in our country, combined with the increasing incidence of infertile couples, require, according to the experts, immediate support measures.
Infertility today is treated under the guidance of reproductive gynecologists, in appropriately equipped centers with experienced and specialized staff. The doctor assesses the individual and family history, discusses with the couple, suggests the appropriate tests in the context of fertility control and prenatal control and guides them step by step in the appropriate process.
In vitro fertilization is one of the most widespread methods of treating infertility and has given the solution to thousands of couples.
In nearly 40 years of applications, exciting developments in the field have undoubtedly occurred. Today we have the highest success rates in Europe with the application of the most innovative techniques and high expertise, while Greek legislation is one of the most progressive in Europe. New methods and achievements make the procedure more accessible and less painful for the woman, dramatically increasing success rates.
In all of this, an important basis is the necessary information for interested infertile couples so that they can know when they need to visit a reproductive gynecologist and what the procedures are, even if there is no direct access to specialized centers, to deal with infertility.
At the IVF EMBRYOGENESIS HEALTH Assisted Reproduction Unit, based on the woman’s safety, respect for science and the couples’ desire to have a child, we have created the best conditions to support all couples to realize their dream.
Being the epitome of technology and supported by leading and renowned reproductive doctors and embryologists, as well as by highly trained and friendly staff, the Unit makes the process of assisted reproduction even more accessible, faithfully following the developments that the field has undoubtedly seen in recent years . Even for women who, for any personal reason, wish to have a child at an advanced age, the option of cryopreservation of eggs is offered, so that they can be used at the time that she will determine. The procedure is now even more efficient and simple, increasing pregnancy rates.
In addition, in order to contribute practically to addressing the demographic problem, we are developing collaborations with other Unions with a common vision of a future with a reduced low birth rate. In this way, the IVF EMBRYOGENESIS HEALTH Unit actively participates in the completion of the work of organizations that support IVF as a therapeutic approach to having a child but also as a key means of increasing the number of births in our country. We support information campaigns throughout Greece, so that even in the most remote areas, distance ceases to be an obstacle to having a child. We give hope to families who didn’t think they could make it.
If there is the right information, there will be an increasing trend in the number of women who wish to proceed with assisted reproduction procedures and contribute to the increase of the reproductive potential of our country. For our children to live a future with fewer problems of infertility and subfertility, a future based on young people.
