Coronavirus: Greece receives 2,000 monoclonal antibodies during the day

by

The first batch of monoclonal antibodies, specifically 2,000 doses, is expected to be received by the Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Technology (IFET) within the day. Greece participates in the EU program for the supply of this treatment.

The administration of monoclonal antibodies will be determined by specific medical criteria, examined by the Infection Committee, from hospitals throughout the country. Monoclonal antibodies cannot be administered to all patients with covid-19. They are given in the hospital, intravenously, and need follow-up. The goal of this treatment is to prevent the disease from getting worse.

They will be stored in a special area, until the “green light” is given for their administration by the EMA (European Medicines Agency) in the coming days.

Monoclonal antibodies are proteins designed in the laboratory to mimic the ability of the immune system to fight the coronavirus. They attach to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, preventing the virus from entering human cells.

At the same time, the procedures for the supply of the antiviral pill of the Merck company are progressing. However, the experts emphasize that the existence of good and effective drugs does not eliminate the necessity of vaccination.
