Pain that becomes chronic -that is, it lasts more than three months- it constitutes a disease. When left untreated, the effects are severe, limiting the patient’s mental concentration, individual and social activity.

The condition is accompanied by insomnia and depression, while a vicious cycle is created that afflicts the patient, as he visits many medical specialties, usually without a satisfactory result.

The experts of the Pain & Palliative Care Clinic of the Papageorgiou Hospital point out the above, which tomorrow (7/11) 10:00-18:00 will welcome the public without an appointment, just like the Pain Clinics of other Hospitals, as part of the Open Day of Pain and Palliative Care Clinics organized by the Hellenic Society of Pain Treatment and Palliative Care (PARIS.SY.A.).

The treatment team of the Clinic will be at the disposal of the patients who visit it, with the aim of informing, diagnosing and treating their pain.

“The Pain & Palliative Care Clinic of the Papageorgiou Hospital operates from October 2022 and was created at a time when corresponding clinics are unfortunately closing, due to the lack of anesthetists. We apply, among other things, the method of neurolysis to patients whose other treatments are not effective in relieving chronic pain”, points out the deputy coordinator – director of the Clinic Eleni Koraki, who together with Marianthi Varveri, director of Anesthesiology, are specialized anesthesiologists in Painology and Clinic Managers.

As Ms. Koraki mentions, “the points where the Clinic innovates are that, first of all, in the context of providing palliative care, a volunteer group installs special morphine administration pumps, at home, for end-stage oncology patients. In addition, it is a pioneer in the invasive part, as it is the only one in Northern Greece in the public sector that applies an invasive technique. Finally, it treats each suffering patient holistically and individually, with the main coordinator being the anesthesiologist-analgesic, but also with the input of a psychologist and an orthopedist.”

The Clinic, which is also an educational center, operates every Tuesday and Thursdayexcept on general duty days, in the Emergency Department, for inpatients and outpatients and appointments are made through the Hospital’s call center (2313323000).
