Chinese scientists have announced the development of a new type of coronavirus test as accurate as PCR and which, they guarantee, presents the results in four minutes.
PCR tests are considered to be more accurate and sensitive for detecting the coronavirus, but results can take a few hours. Other faster tests are less reliable.
Scientists at Shanghai Fudan University claim they have found a solution.
In a peer-reviewed paper published Monday in Nature Biomedical Engineering, the university team says its sensor, which uses microelectronics, analyzes the sample’s genetic material without having to go through the lab.
During testing, the team obtained samples from 33 people infected with the coronavirus in Shanghai who also underwent PCR tests. The results showed a “perfect” coincidence between the two methodologies.
The study tested a new method on a total of 54 people, including patients with fever but no coronavirus and healthcare volunteers. None of them had a false positive, according to the team of scientists.
Scientists say that once developed, this type of test could be used in a variety of situations, such as airports, healthcare facilities or “even indoors”.
