Sixty are the deaths from corona and 62 intubated patients in the last week according to the epidemiological report of EODY on viral infections of the respiratory system.

In our country, a total of 101 strains of JN.1 (a sub-variant of BA.2.86 which was recognized as a sub-variant of epidemiological interest from 12/19) have been detected, with a sampling date from 3/10 to 3/12. The additional risk to public health from JN.1 is currently assessed as low internationally.

Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARS-CoV-2 virus circulation in 8 out of 10 areas tested.

Influenza positivity in the community (sentinel network) remains above 10% (seasonal threshold for initiation of epidemic influenza activity according to ECDC). 4 new serious cases with hospitalization in ICU were recorded, while 1 new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza was recorded.

The EODY report in detail:

Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)

✓ The number of influenza cases per 1,000 visits showed an increase compared to
last week

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

✓ The positivity in all the tested samples showed an increase compared to the previous one
week.
✓ The number of admissions (n=1,373) showed a 45% increase compared to the average weekly number
imports in the previous 4 weeks and was higher than the number of imports on
corresponding week of 2022 (n=1,349).
✓ The number of new intubations (n=26) showed an increase compared to the average weekly number
of new intubations during the previous 4 weeks (n=22) and was lower than the number of
intubations in the corresponding week of 2022 (n=44).
✓ The number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 62.
✓ 60 deaths were recorded with a median age of 86.5 years (range 57-98 years). The number of deaths
showed an increase over the average weekly number of deaths over the previous 4 weeks
(n=44) and was lower than the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2022 (n=158)
✓ At week 47, the most frequent BA.2 sub-variant was EG.5 (39%) followed by XBB.1.5
(30%) and BA.2.86 (20%).
✓ In our country, a total of 101 strains of JN.1 (sub-variant of BA.2.86 which from 19/12
identified as a sub-variant of epidemiological interest), with date of sampling from
3/10 to 3/12. The additional risk to public health from JN.1 is assessed internationally on
present as low.
✓ Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed an increase in SARS-CoV-2 virus circulation in 8
of the 10 areas checked.

Influenza virus

✓ Influenza positivity in the community (sentinel network) remains above 10% (seasonal start threshold
of influenza epidemic activity according to ECDC).
✓ 4 new serious cases with hospitalization in ICU were recorded, while 1 new death was recorded from
laboratory confirmed influenza.
✓ From week 40/2023 to week 50/2023, 18 people were hospitalized with laboratory
confirmed influenza in the ICU and 5 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.
✓ In the two influenza reference centers they have been recorded from week 40/2023 up to and including week
50/2023, 57 (95%) type A and 2 (3%) type B samples.
✓ Of the 57 type A strains that were subtyped, 15 (26%) belonged to subtype A(H3) and 42 (74%)
in subtype A(H1)pdm09.

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV

✓ A significant increase in RSV positivity occurs in non-sentinel hospital samples
