“The gradual lifting of restrictions is possible,” said Pediatric Infectious Diseases Professor Vana Papaevangelou, stressing, however, that the epidemiological burden remains high.
“All of Greece is in deep red,” he said, noting that “the phase is coming when we will learn to coexist with the coronavirus and everyone will make their own decisions.”
As he said, what the Commission is concerned with is the transfer of cases to older people and the impact that this will have on the NSS. “The virus will find the unvaccinated and infect them,” he said.
Finally, he referred to a CDC study which showed that, regardless of vaccination, using a mask indoors reduces the virus infection by 56%. He noted, however, that at that stage everyone will be able to choose what level of protection they will have and what mask they will wear.
Regarding the cases, he stated that 1.5% of the population of the country are active cases and that the positivity throughout the territory is at 2.4%.
He also pointed out that in some areas that Omicron was late to reach, there is now a slight upsurge.
