Exercise immediately after vaccinations can increase antibodies – What a study has shown

by

A 90-minute exercise of light to moderate intensity, such as walking, jogging, cycling or other aerobic activity, immediately after the coronavirus or flu vaccine may improve antibody production, according to a new US scientific study.

Researchers at Iowa State University, led by kinesiology professor Marian Kochut, published in the journal Neuroscience and Immunology Brain, Behavior and Immunity, asked a group of Pfizer-Bioch vaccination, while another group of vaccinated patients avoided the slightest exercise.

The comparison of the antibodies concluded that within the next four weeks, those who exercised immediately afterwards showed an increased immune response, which was confirmed in a similar experiment in rodents. The researchers investigated whether the same effect occurs after 45 minutes of exercise, but found that this time is not enough. Research has also not found that exercise immediately after the coronavirus vaccine increases any side effects.

“Our preliminary results are the first to show that a certain amount of exercise time can improve the body’s immune response to both the Covid-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine,” Kohut said. He pointed out that this even applies to the overweight or obese, who made up about half of the participants. He added, however, that the findings need to be confirmed and further studied by other studies, which will, among other things, investigate whether 60 minutes of exercise is enough to increase antibodies.

As he said, “there are so many changes that happen when we exercise – metabolic, biochemical, neuroendocrine, circulatory. So, there is probably a combination of factors that contribute to the immune response we found in our study.”
