NGOs trigger MPF after Universal Church announces HIV ‘cure’ ‘through faith’

by

The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God shared on its social networks a message that says that a couple of believers were cured of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), “through faith”. The publication was made on Instagram and Facebook of the church on Tuesday (15).

According to the post, the couple did not accept to undergo treatment against HIV and, after making the so-called “current of the 70”, achieved “the cure”.

“Manoel and Rosemeire were infected with the HIV virus, causing symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, lack of appetite and body wounds. The couple did not accept to live on treatment, they made the Chain of 70 knowing that the cure would come through faith put into practice and, with the certainty that the time for miracles is not over. Today, they are healed”, says the publication.

In reaction, Foaesp (Forum of NGOs/AIDS in the state of São Paulo) held a demonstration at the MPF (Federal Public Ministry) to verify the existence of crime in the message broadcast by Universal on social networks.

The forum asked the agency to institute a “procedure regarding the dissemination of false information regarding the treatment of HIV/AIDS, which can lead people to give up their medical treatments, and as a consequence, die after the manifestation of the disease”.

Jamal Suleiman, an infectious disease specialist at the Emílio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases, reinforces that seropositive patients should not abandon their treatments, as it is precisely the drugs that progressively lead to the undetectability of the viral load in the body.

With continuous treatment, the infectious disease specialist emphasizes that seropositive people can have an “absolutely normal” life from the point of view of mental and physical health, as they leave the risk zone for opportunistic infections and, in addition, can achieve a full sexual life, a since with an undetectable viral load, they do not put the partner at risk of infection.

“It’s a treatment that I usually say is quite simple. And this simplicity can be understood as something that can be abandoned. That’s where the big problem of therapy for people living with HIV/AIDS lies, because then they’re vulnerable to approach of criminals who publicize that the disease can be cured through a miracle”, says Suleiman.

“Who wouldn’t want to be cured of such a serious and stigmatizing disease through a miracle? However, it is important for people to understand that the miracle is found in science, in providing medicines that can make a person live full, comfortable way.”

In a note to sheetthe Universal Church declares that “it regrets the sensationalist exploitation that the press makes of a spontaneous testimony of a couple, who announced that they had been cured of a serious illness by faith”.

The institution says that it always warns the faithful that medical treatments should never be ignored and that there are “numerous” studies proving that faith helps in the healing of the sick.

The report was unable to locate the couple identified as Manoel and Rosemeire to comment on the statements.

The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God regrets the sensationalist exploitation that the press makes of the spontaneous testimony of a couple, who announced that they had been cured of a serious illness by faith.

There is a lack of journalistic honesty in trying to spread that Universal claims to have cured the couple, when in fact the Church’s Facebook post about the case doesn’t say so. It’s fake news!

Universal never claimed to have cured the couple, because the Church does not cure. Healing is by faith, in the name of the Lord Jesus.

In fact, when defending the biblical faith in helping the sick, Universal always warns that medical treatments should never be ignored.

On the other hand, the Folha de S.Paulo and its reporters don’t have to share the same beliefs as Christians, but they shouldn’t attack them or ignore science – and there are countless studies proving that faith does help in healing the sick.

In this sense, the international press reports that there are recent studies showing evidence that spirituality has a significant impact on health and well-being, providing “lower levels of mortality, depression, suicide, drug use, or even hospitalizations and medication”.

These surveys are conducted through the SBC (Brazilian Society of Cardiology), Faculty of Medicine of UFJF (Federal University of Juiz de Fora), Stanford School of Medicine, Duke Universities of Florida, Texas and Columbia, University of Munich, Germany, Calgary, Canada, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK, among others.

This is how thousands of people, not only from Universal, report success stories in overcoming serious illnesses, in a combination of faith and medicine.
