The health authorities of Crete have sounded the alarm, as according to exclusive information from Creta24.gr, two cases of plague in lambs have been detected on the island.

The information states that the cases were detected in a unit of the prefecture of Heraklion activating the management protocol with emergency procedures.

The information states that the “route” of the plague case in the prefecture of Heraklion starts in Thessaly, where the most cases in Greece have been identified, namely 20 of the 22 in total.

This is a nightmarish development for the livestock breeding of Crete, as in the event of the spread of the plague, the effects on the sector are characterized as nightmarish.

Characteristic is the fact that for the 22 confirmed cases in Greece, more than 10,000 sheep and goats have been killed.

Greece follows the European protocol according to which after each confirmed case the animal is killed, then all the animals of the unit where the case is found are killed and the unit is quarantined after it has been disinfected.

This protocol will also be activated in the case of cases in the prefecture of Heraklion in the hope that there will be no spread and the problem will be dealt with at its origin.

In the last few hours, successive meetings have been held between all the involved bodies of the island for the management of the situation which causes strong concern for a possible “domino” on the island, a development that everyone is avoiding.

It should be noted that in the last 24 hours, emergency health measures have been implemented to deal with the disease, with strict restrictions on the movement of live sheep and goats throughout the territory.

Tempe

A new case of sheep and goat plague was also recorded in Tempi.

The case is within the zones in the municipality of Tempe and does not inspire any concern since it is within a controlled area.
