The first case of West Nile virus appeared in Attica, 3 years later
Cases and deaths are increasing in Greece, due to the West Nile virus, while after an absence of three years it also appeared in Attica.
According to the EODY, the first case was detected in the area of ​​Kallithea.
Remember that West Nile virus is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
In total during the week of August 7-14, 2024, 21 new cases were reported, as well as 2 deaths. Thus, the total number of domestic cases of the infection this year amounts to 76.
In fact, 10 of the patients did not survive, according to the weekly epidemiological surveillance report of the virus infection.
In particular, from the beginning of the 2024 period, until 14/08/2024 (13.00), a total of seventy-six (76) domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece, of which fifty-seven ( 57) cases had CNS manifestations (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and nineteen (19) cases had mild/no CNS manifestations (Table 1).
Twenty one (21) new domestic cases were diagnosed/reported during the last week. Two imported cases of the infection in patients exposed in another country have also been recorded
abroad (not included in the further analysis). Ten (10) deaths have been recorded in patients infected with the virus, aged over 60 years (median age of deceased = 80 years, range 61 – 92 years).
