The construction of a new modern Cancer Hospital in the city of Thessaloniki.

The Interministerial Committee was attended by the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikolaos Papathanasis as Chairman, the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis, the Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos and the Minister of State responsible for the Coordination of the Government Project ‘Akis Skertsos. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistokleous and the head of the PPP Unit Nikos Sergis.

The implementation of a new Cancer Hospital of Thessaloniki through PPP, with the Contracting Authority The Cancer Hospital of Thessaloniki “Theageneio”, concerns the study, financing, construction and maintenance of the new hospital, with the total duration of the Partnership Agreement amounting to thirty (30) years, while its estimated value amounts to 350.5 million euros plus VAT.

In particular, the construction of a hospital with a capacity of 425 beds is planned, which will consist of, for example:

• Intensive Care Unit with 10 beds

• Patient palliative care unit

• Day care unit for surgical cases and chemotherapy

• Patient service unit with psychological support and pain unit

• Outpatient department and limited emergency department

• Laboratory-Diagnostic Sector in “in vitro” and “in vivo” services such as radiodiagnosis, nuclear medicine, endoscopies and “in vitro” laboratories with molecular sector

• Radiation therapy department and radioisotope treatments department

• Laundry rooms for cleaning clothes, kitchen and other common areas.

The implementation of this specific PPP project aims to create a new modern anti-cancer hospital in the city of Thessaloniki, which will meet the modern requirements of prevention, diagnosis, hospitalization and treatment of patients and will provide high-quality health services, while, at the same time, improving the service level of patient health incidents in the region of Northern Greece more broadly. At the same time, it will offer modern working conditions to the doctors, nurses and other staff of the hospital, while solving problems found in the existing “Theagenio” hospital.

Its implementation marks a project of emblematic importance for the co-capital, as it will meet the modern requirements of prevention, diagnosis, hospitalization and treatment of the patients of Northern Greece, offering high quality health services. With a plan and intensive work, we are building step by step the new NHS, which we have envisioned and which all Greek women and men deserve”, said the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis.

For his part, the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikolaos Papathanasis, emphasized:

“Today’s approval is yet another practical proof of the importance that the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis attaches to Health, to the improvement of infrastructure, but also to regional development. We continue to make our commitments a reality.”
