Potential carcinogens have been identified in materials that come into contact with food, including plastics and paper
Nearly 200 chemicals that are likely to cause breast cancer have been identified in materials that come into contact with food, including plastics and paper, according to research by the Swiss non-profit Food Packaging Forum.
In particular, during the research, published in the journal “Frontiers in Toxicology”, 189 such substances were detected in materials that come into contact with food, including 143 in plastics and 89 in paper or cardboard.
For the research, the scientific team used a recently published list of substances that can potentially cause breast cancer, developed by researchers at the Silent Spring Institute, as well as the Food Packaging Forum’s database (FCCmigex Database) of chemicals that come into contact with food, which gathers information from thousands of published scientific studies.
The species studied were sourced from markets in areas of the world with high regulation of food contact materials, including the EU and USA. The findings highlight the urgent need for stronger preventive measures to reduce these chemicals in everyday products.
