The voice is determined by its volume, frequency and tone. The term volume describes how loud it sounds, with the frequency if it is loud or bass and the tone determines how we hear it, if the sensation it causes us is pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. The voice and its characteristics, but mainly the frequency, evolve from the first day of life until its end. This evolution and the changes caused are related to the anatomical and biological changes that every human body undergoes over time, he explains. Dr. Konstantinos Lambropoulos.
What are the differences between the voices of a man and a woman?
The genuine vocal cords of children, boys and girls, have many similarities and it is difficult to distinguish the boy’s childish voice from the girl’s voice, in terms of volume and frequency. According to the expert, during adolescence and with the effect of sex hormones, along with the physical changes (hair growth, height, weight), there are changes in the length of the strings. In women the length increases by 50% compared to children, while in men by 100%. This has a direct effect on the frequency produced, and the female voice is louder than the male bass. At the same time, the changes that accompany the change of the lungs and the resonators affect both the intensity and the tone.
Are there changes in a woman’s voice during a woman’s reproductive age depending on the phase of her menstrual cycle?
The larynx is a “target organ” for female hormones, and therefore during the menstrual cycle the observed changes in the laryngeal mucosa directly affect the female voice, although this is more easily perceived by women – voice professionals. Especially in artists, 2-3 days before menstruation cause due to a small swelling a blur in the voice and a loss of flexibility in its use. In the old days, singers were relieved of their obligations on those “special” days, which were called “Grace days”. But also after menopause the voice changes, “weighs” and loses some of its qualities and talents.
If I change my voice continuously and for a long time, how are my vocal cords affected?
Changes in the voice, if made with knowledge and technique, do not cause problems. However, if there is no proper training and guidance, vocal injury can be caused by the pressure exerted, with mucosal lesions (polyps, cysts), which often necessitate surgery.
It is possible to constantly change my voice to cause irreversible damage to my vocal cords;
Irreversibly probably not, although any surgery or medication requires an adjustment of the vocal model. It is therefore equally important to be aware of the physiology of the vocal mechanism and to avoid the same mistakes in the daily use of the voice.
If for some reason I have to change my voice (due to profession, etc.) how can I protect the vocal cords?
There are two weapons we have, says Mr. Lambropoulos: 1. Maintaining vocal hygiene (eg good hydration) and avoiding habits harmful to the voice (eg smoking). 2. Training by specialist voice therapists, who will guide a voice professional in the safe and protected use of the voice, for any purpose or duration required.
