Five years after the pandemic began, the WHO has asked China to share its evidence to understand how it started
OR China has shared most of the information regarding her COVID-19 and the results of the relevant investigations with the international community and the same project to identify the origin of the coronavirus should be carried out in other countries, the country’s ministry announced today. Five years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization again yesterday on Monday asked China to share its data and information to understand how it started.
The Organization, which is part of the United Nations, recalled that on December 31, 2019, its office in China became aware of an announcement by the health authorities of Wuhan that spoke of cases of “viral pneumonia” in that city.
“In the weeks, months and years that followed, Covid-19 disrupted our lives and our world,” the WHO said.
Earlier this month, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was asked whether the world is better prepared today for a possible future pandemic. “The answer is: both yes and no. If the next pandemic happened today, the world would be facing the same weaknesses that allowed Covid-19 to take hold and spread five years ago,” he said. “But the world also learned many painful lessons from the pandemic and took important steps to strengthen its defenses against future pandemics,” he added.
In December 2021, international consultations began to agree on measures to prevent, prepare and intervene in the event of a new pandemic. The 194 WHO member countries, which participated in the negotiations, accept the content of the agreement, but not its practical aspects. The deadline for ending negotiations is May 2025.
