A spokeswoman for the World Health Organization said on Friday that the end of the Covid-19 pandemic is a long way off, citing an increase in cases in the latest weekly data.
The UN health agency previously said that the acute phase of the pandemic could end this year, but it would depend on how quickly the target of vaccinating 70% of the population in each country would be reached, among other factors.
Asked by a journalist at a press conference in Geneva about the timing of the end of the pandemic, Margaret Harris said it was “far from over”.
“We are definitely in the middle of the pandemic,” he added.
After more than a month of decline, Covid cases began to rise around the world last week, the WHO said, with lockdowns in Asia and the Chinese province of Jilin struggling to contain an outbreak.
A combination of factors are causing the increases, including the highly transmissible omicron variant and the BA.2 subvariant, and the suspension of social and public health measures, according to the WHO.
